Stop in for a sample of Blue Mountain Beer on 1/24 from 4:30-6:30pm
Blue Mountain Brewery sits in the shadow of Appalachia’s Blue Ridge Mountains in Afton, Virginia. We are a farm brewery, growing our own hops, and proudly craft real American beer inspired by thousands of years of tradition but not limited by convention.
All our ales and lagers are produced onsite on a 15 x 30 barrel Premier Stainless brewing system, where we hand craft 2,500 barrels per year (about 80,000 gallons). The brewery’s water source is a 300-foot well drilled by an old spring and fed by miles of untouched forest watershed that form the back slope of our brewing campus. Our own hops are featured year-round in the Full Nelson strong pale ale.
Blue Mountain Brewery is a proud member of the Virginia Green program. Our environmental efforts include many day-to-day activities aimed at reducing waste, using water efficiently, and conserving energy; for example, we have rain barrels which are directly connected to the irrigation system for our hop farm, and we have an engineered water treatment facility that continuously aerobically treats our brewery effluent before returning it to the earth.
About the Blue Mountain Team:
Taylor Smack has been brewing beer professionally since early 2000 after receiving the Certificate of Brewing Technology from Chicago’s Siebel Institute, the country’s oldest school for the craft of brewing. He was the head brewer of both Goose Island brewpubs in Chicago and spent six years as the brewer for Charlottesville, Virginia’s South Street Brewery before opening Blue Mountain in 2007.
Mandi Smack spent the seven years previous to opening Blue Mountain Brewery in the publishing business, working for Hoyt Publishing in Chicago, and C-ville Weekly newspaper and Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine in Charlottesville, Virginia, in capacities ranging from marketing to sales to Business Manager. She is our CFO, marketing manager, and the lead force behind our front-of-house restaurant/pub operations.
Matt Nucci has spent most of his last seven years working with Greenberry’s Coffee and Tea company, based in Charlottesville. He was in charge of production and new franchise developments and helped the company grow to a multi-state gourmet coffee business by the time he left in early 2007 to help found Blue Mountain Brewery.
